Orangetown Teams go 3-0 at the Rockland v. Westchester Challenge
The 2016 season got off to a winning start for three Orangetown Varsity Boys soccer programs yesterday, as Albertus Magus HS, Tappan Zee HS and Pearl River HS all posted notable wins.
This is the fourth time that high school teams from the neighboring counties have met to play the beautiful game and to raise money for a beautiful cause, supporting the fight against cancer. Lakeland HS has hosted it twice, Tappan Zee once, with Pearl River hosting this year's event at the Orangetown Soccer Complex, home to OMM Soccer, BuddyBall and World Class FC. This year the event was dedicated to three Pearl River HS students - senior Sara McGrath and junior Liam Greeley are both currently battling cancer, and all funds raised will go to support their treatment. Senior Francesco Galvano waged a multi-year fight and was declared cancer-free last year. For more information or to make a donation, please contact PRHS Coach Damon O'Keefe at

In 4 years the host county has never lost a challenge, and Albertus Magnus helped keep that streak alive with a convincing 2-1 win over Valhalla HS in the opening round of games. Tappan Zee then went to work on this Labor Day, grinding out a 3-1 victory against Section 1 Class A foe Byram Hills HS. Meanwhile North Rockland HS and Suffern HS fell by identical 2-1 score lines to Scarsdale HS and Mamaroneck HS respectively, setting up the nightcap game between Pearl River and Lakeland as the championship match. The first half ended 0-0, but with Lakeland peppering the Pirate's goal and controlling almost all of the play. After some halftime adjustments Pearl River scored 3 second-half goals to claim the title for Rockland and complete the Orangetown sweep.
